Feelings can be terrifying and daunting, especially because we can relive the same experiences for decades of our lives, even when the circumstances and people are different. We do not feel with our body; we feel with our brain. Our brain interprets the sensory awareness of our body through the experiences we’ve had and the labels we give it. If we don’t recognize this, we will continue living the same life year after year. It’s kind of like buying the same ingredients every trip to the grocery store, yet we constantly yearn for something new, but we don’t know how to experience new because we haven’t expanded our categories of food, cooking, or what our palate might like. Life is the same way. We want something different, yet our brain relies on the feelings we have given and assigned cues to.

The idea that feelings are not inherently tied to specific experiences or circumstances may seem counterintuitive, but it’s rooted in the way our brain processes emotions. Emotions are complex responses to stimuli, and how we interpret them can vary greatly based on our past experiences, conditioning, and the meanings we attach to them.
