In Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale, Ariel gives up her beautiful voice in exchange for legs — technically not just legs, but what she believed legs gave her, freedom. If you’ve watched the Disney movie, Ariel is willing to risk her one true voice for one chance that she will be noticed, cherished and the prince will fall in-love with her.
We do not speak to merely hear ourselves talk. We speak because we have a song to sing, because we have something to say.
Ariel made the mis-step, even before she had legs, of not only giving her voice away but giving her power away too. Yet, she thought in that one comparative and fragile moment that by being loved by the prince, her world could literally change. Ariel longed to “be seen”. The truth is I can relate to…
